Do your nails look like this?

It is estimated to affect 1.6 million Australians. Appearance of the nail can range from white and separated through to brown and crumbly. Fungus usually invades the nail because of injury to the nail bed, neglected hygiene, tight footwear or pre-existing medical condition.

Results

We will take the time to walk you through understanding all six of the available options to treat your nail fungus.

Ignore

Untreated Nail Fungus

Many people ignore the problem as they do not cause any pain in the mild stages.

However, if left untreated, the fungus will migrate from the tip of nail towards the root. The nail may become more discoloured, ingrowing and thicker, resulting in pain. Also, it may spread to other toes and to the other foot.

Over the Counter Nail Paints

Over-the-counter topical antifungals

There are plenty of over-the-counter topical antifungals on chemist shelves.

They are a convenient, lower cost option, most of which promise more than they deliver. Sadly, if you have used them, they have a very low success rate as they do not penetrate the nail effectively to treat the fungus. We will be able to give you options that can be used. We stock attractive nail polish which aren’t available at chemists.

Oral Medications

Nail Fungal Oral Medication

Oral medications which treat the nails systemically have a decent success rate and require a course of 3 or 6 months.

However they are not right for everyone, due to cost, serious side effects to the liver and kidneys, or personal aversion to pills. The fact blood tests are required every 4 to 6 weeks to see if the liver is coping is indicative of the harm it causes.

Surgery

Nail Fungal Surgery
A medical professional (GP or podiatrist) may surgically remove the affected part of the nail.
However, the toenail fungus usually inhabits the nail bed. Therefore, unless the entire nail is removed, the infection usually returns. In chronic and severe cases which are painful, the entire nail can be removed and killed. This leaves just the skin which is not aesthetically nice to look at.
The laser industry advancements are moving very fast and technology 5 years ago only have one or two wavelengths. They have a lower success rate, are expensive and the heat can cause pain and discomfort. Those models have been superseded by cold laser and more modern four wavelengths hot lasers which are far more effective, less expensive and painless.

Recent advancements in laser technology have now enabled the development of painless, less expensive treatment with the highest success rate. The process will take about 6 months.

Onychomycosis – or fungal nail infection – is an infection caused by fungus in the nail or nail bed. The condition may cause the nail to change colour to white streaks, to a yellow and eventually to a brown in severe cases. Also, the nail may thicken and separate from the nail bed. Onychomycosis can also affect fingernails.

Why Laser?

Laser is a major advancement in the treatment of fungal nail infections. In published clinical trials it has been shown to have over 80% success rate.

The infrared light of laser is used to penetrate the nail plate and eradicate the fungus. It requires a series of treatments without damaging the nail or the skin around it. Most hot lasers hurt but our two lasers are pain-free and there are no side effects. After the treatment, the nail is able to grow out free of infection. For context, in a published study by the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in April 2012, it found approximately 14%- 50% effective with a recurrence rate of 10-53 % with oral medication when taken daily for 3-4 months. The same Journal Article found nail paints were 5.5% – 8.5% effective when used daily for 10-12 months.
