However, if left untreated, the fungus can spread from the nail tip to the root, causing increased discolouration, thickening, and ingrown nails, which may lead to pain. It can also spread to other toes and even the other foot.
Over the Counter Nail Paints
While they offer a convenient and cost-effective option, most over-the-counter antifungals tend to overpromise and underdeliver. Unfortunately, their success rate is low as they fail to penetrate the nail effectively. We can provide alternative treatment options, including specialised nail polishes not available in chemists.
Oral Medications
These medications may not be suitable for all patients due to their high cost, potential liver and kidney complications, or personal preference against pills. The requirement for blood tests every 4 to 6 weeks to monitor liver health is a clear indication of their potential impact.
Surgery
Because the fungus primarily lives in the nail bed, removing part of the nail often doesn’t stop the infection from returning. In severe, painful cases, total nail removal is an option, though it results in exposed skin, which may not be aesthetically pleasing.
Laser Treatment
Through increased blood vessel stimulation and targeted heat application, laser treatment helps improve circulation to the nail and effectively kills fungal organisms, allowing for healthier nail regrowth.
The laser industry is advancing rapidly. While some lasers have been in use for 5–10 years, the latest technology offers the highest chance of eliminating nail fungus. We use the only Class 4 Laser on the market approved for fungal nail treatment, whereas most available lasers are Class 1 or Class 2.
Types of Lasers
After extensive research, we identified two standout laser types. Instead of choosing just one, we invested in both to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. We use the Class-2 Lunula Cold Laser and the Class-4 K-Laser. Individually, neither provided the results we desired, but by combining both during appointments, we achieved the clear, healthy nails our clients wanted.
