FUNGAL NAILS

Onychomycosis Treatments

Due to the persistent nature of Fungal Nails (Onychomycosis), we have dedicated significant resources—nearly a quarter of a million dollars—toward securing the latest laser technology, providing one of the most advanced treatment options available.

With advancements in technology, individuals now have a new option to combat stubborn nail fungus. At Adelaide Fungal Nail Laser Clinic, our experienced podiatrists utilise the latest laser technology to effectively treat fungal nail infections.

Nail Fungus Treatment Options

Ignore

Adelaide Nail Fungus
Because there is little to no pain in the early stages, people often dismiss the problem.

However, if left untreated, the fungus can spread from the nail tip to the root, causing increased discolouration, thickening, and ingrown nails, which may lead to pain. It can also spread to other toes and even the other foot.

Over the Counter Nail Paints

Adelaide Nail Anti Fungals
A wide range of over-the-counter topical antifungals can be found on chemist shelves.

While they offer a convenient and cost-effective option, most over-the-counter antifungals tend to overpromise and underdeliver. Unfortunately, their success rate is low as they fail to penetrate the nail effectively. We can provide alternative treatment options, including specialised nail polishes not available in chemists.

Oral Medications

Adelaide Nail Fungal Oral Medicatoin
Medications taken orally to treat fungal nails systemically offer a good success rate, usually requiring a 3- to 6-month course.

These medications may not be suitable for all patients due to their high cost, potential liver and kidney complications, or personal preference against pills. The requirement for blood tests every 4 to 6 weeks to monitor liver health is a clear indication of their potential impact.

Surgery

Adelaide Nail Fungal Surgery
In some cases, a GP or podiatrist may opt for surgical removal of the infected section of the nail.

Because the fungus primarily lives in the nail bed, removing part of the nail often doesn’t stop the infection from returning. In severe, painful cases, total nail removal is an option, though it results in exposed skin, which may not be aesthetically pleasing.

Laser Treatment

Through increased blood vessel stimulation and targeted heat application, laser treatment helps improve circulation to the nail and effectively kills fungal organisms, allowing for healthier nail regrowth.

The laser industry is advancing rapidly. While some lasers have been in use for 5–10 years, the latest technology offers the highest chance of eliminating nail fungus. We use the only Class 4 Laser on the market approved for fungal nail treatment, whereas most available lasers are Class 1 or Class 2.

Types of Lasers

After extensive research, we identified two standout laser types. Instead of choosing just one, we invested in both to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. We use the Class-2 Lunula Cold Laser and the Class-4 K-Laser. Individually, neither provided the results we desired, but by combining both during appointments, we achieved the clear, healthy nails our clients wanted.

Class-2 and Class-4 K-Laser

At Adelaide Fungal Nail Laser Clinic, we employ the Class-2 Erchonia® Lunula Laser® and the Class-4 K-Laser, two cutting-edge lasers providing innovative solutions for persistent onychomycosis. This unique combination allows us to deliver six independent wavelengths in every appointment, ensuring treatment with both low and high power levels.

What Sets Us Apart

What makes us different from clinics that only have the Lunula Laser is that a podiatrist oversees every appointment, rather than an unqualified receptionist or beauty therapist. This professional approach not only ensures better care but may also allow you to claim through health insurance or Medicare with a doctor’s referral. We proudly service Adelaide serving patients from Walkerville, Unley, Prospect, St Peters, Brompton, Norwood, Thebarton, Mile End, Parkside, Glenside, Fullarton, Frewville, Myrtle Bank, Highgate, Glenunga and beyond.
